4 Ways To Help You Transition To Using Reusable Bags

by Clarence Horton

If you want to reduce your impact on the environment, a great way to start is by using reusable shopping bags instead of taking the plastic or paper bags that the store provides you with. Making the transition to reusable bags requires you to make some adjustments to your habits.

Way #1: Purchase Lots of Bags

First, you will want to purchase lots of bags so that you have enough for all of your shopping. A reusable shopping bag can generally hold a lot more stuff than a traditional plastic bag. However, you don't want to underestimate the number of bags that you need for grocery shopping. Additionally, if you tend to stop at more than one store when you do your errands, you will want to have at least one or two bags for each store. At least five bags are a good number to start with, and you can purchase more if necessary.

There are lots of fun designs on reusable bags, and you may find that you have fun collecting and buying different designs once you start.

Way #2: Keep Your Bags in the Car

Second, when you purchased your bags, put them in your car.

After you bring in and put your groceries and other purchases away, take the bags and immediately put them back into the car. Get into this habit so that you know where your bags are and have them when you need them. If you don't want to go back out to your car, put a hook by your door and hang the bags so you can quickly grab them when heading out to the car.

Don't set them on the kitchen counter; your storage space for them should be in your car so that you always have them on hand. You may even want to find a designated spot to put them inside of your vehicle.

Way #3: Have Bags for Different Purchases

Third, you are going to want to have different bags for different purchases. For example, you will want to have bags that are designated just for produce, just for meats, for items such as clothing and shampoo, and for canned goods.

The best way to achieve this is by purchasing different colors or designs for each type of bag you need. For example, you could buy green bags for your produce, red bags for your meat, and blue ones for your other purchases.

Way #4: Remember to Wash Your Bags

Fourth, it is essential to wash your bags. You don't have to wash the bags every time you take them to the store. However, you are going to want to wash them every other week or so. You want to keep your reusable bags as sanitary as possible. Once you wash them, put them right back into your car.

You can further improve your impact on the environment by using bags made from ethically sourced materials, further reducing the impact you have on the environment.
