Choose An Office Ensemble That Sends These Messages About You

by Clarence Horton

If you're making some changes to your wardrobe or you've just been hired for a new job, it's advantageous to think about what messages you want to send with how you dress. Of course, you'll want to appear stylish and professional, but there are many other mindsets that you might have about your work — and that your outfit can portray. Visit a women's clothing store that has an ample selection of the type of attire that you want to wear to the office, and then begin to select pieces that will suit you. Here are some messages that you can send with your clothing.

You're Ambitious

People often recommend dressing for a position that you eventually hope to obtain, rather than the position that you currently hold. This means that if you're an analyst but you want to one day be the manager who leads the team of analysts, you want to dress more in line with what the current manager wear than what the current analysts wear. Choose clothing that shows this ambition. For example, if your peers frequently wear khaki pants to work, go a step further by wearing dress pants.

You Want To Be Taken Seriously

Being taken seriously is something that is very important to many women in the workplace. This can especially be true if you're younger than most of the people in your office, and thus feel worried that they might view you as immature. Fortunately, the clothing that you buy to wear to the office can help to send a message that you want to be taken seriously. Many of your peers might dress down on Fridays, perhaps wearing jeans and sweaters. Choosing attire that is a little more relaxed than usual can be suitable to show that you want people to take you seriously.

You Aren't Vain

Some people have trouble with those who appear vain. For example, while many people will agree that looking your best at work is a good idea, some people may feel as though certain people spend too long putting their ensembles together, and perhaps even adjusting their clothing throughout the day. Without forgetting that you want to look your best, choose clothing that suggests you aren't vain. For example, rather than selecting a blouse that has 20 small buttons down the front of it, choose one that has a conventional number of buttons. This can send a message that you're not preoccupied with your outfits to a fault.
